Crittenden and Knight Finish in the Top-Three at NCAA Championships
3/12/2016 7:38:00 PM | Track and Field
Freddie Crittenden III and Justyn Knight each reached the podium at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday to highlight a historic weekend for Syracuse.
Four members of the Orange received First Team All-America honors, the most in program history as Syracuse picked up 16 team points on the weekend.
Crittenden III followed up his personal best from yesterday with another PR in the 60-meter hurdles final on Saturday, racing to a time of 7.64 seconds, which was good for a second place finish – the best finish by any member of the Orange since Jarret Eaton's 2012 NCAA Championship in the 60-meter hurdles.
Oregon's Devon Allen (7.56 seconds) won the title in the event.
Syracuse got another podium performance from Justyn Knight later in the meet, with the sophomore in his first year of indoor eligibility taking third in the highly contested 3000-meter field.
Â
Knight stayed near the front of the pack for the duration of the race, with Oregon's Edward Cheserek leading the field with four laps left en route to winning another title, but Knight kept pushing the pace on the rest of the field along with Stanford's Sean McGorty, who'd finish second, 0.3 seconds ahead of Knight.
Knight's time of 8:01.85 earned him a third place finish to earn USTFCCCA All-America honors. He now has earned All-America accolades in cross country, indoor and outdoor track in just a year and a half at 'Cuse.
The day was started with another All-American worthy performance as Adam Palamar took eighth in the men's mile. The junior celebrated his birthday with a time of 4:07.89. Virginia's Henry Wynne won the title in the event.
The Orange continued their rise to national prominence under head coach and USTFCCCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year Chris Fox this weekend, with the historic finishes in indoor track coming on the heels of the 2015 NCAA Cross Country Championship.
Syracuse will now look to continue its trend into the outdoor season, where a program-best eight student-athletes qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2015.
