Benne Anderson will represent Syracuse in the NCAA Championship final of the 1,500-meter run, advancing on day one of NCAA competition.
Anderson started off the day with a fourth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run, automatically advancing him to Friday's final. Anderson set a new personal best time of 3:36.15, just 0.08 seconds off the Orange's school record in the event.
Anderson raced in the significantly faster of the two heats, with 10 of the 12 runners in his heat posting faster times than the winner of the opening heat. He started out at the back of the pack, working his way up the field in laps two and three. On the backstretch of the final lap, a pack of six broke off, which Anderson placed himself in the middle of. The group cruised over the last 50 meters to all secure spots in Friday's NCAA final.
Jamir Brown missed qualifying for the final by a hundredth of a second. He turned in a time of 13.37 seconds, which was good for 10th overall, with the ninth and final qualifier posting a time of 13.36 seconds. Brown fell victim to the fastest qualifying heats in NCAA history. Just a sophomore in a field where eight of the top-10 finishers were juniors or seniors, he posted the fastest NCAA semifinal time in history for a student-athlete that did not advance to the final.
Brown's heat saw a new collegiate leader this year and one of the five-fastest times in NCAA history, but that stood for just moments, as Auburn's Ja'Kobe Tharp smashed a 14-year-old World Record in the second heat.
Mallard was 14th in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 50.03. He was fifth in his heat.
Both Brown and Mallard will be USTFCCCA Second Team All-Americans for their performances on Wednesday. Anderson will race on Friday evening with a shot at an NCAA title.
