
Orange Sweep Tigers in Doubleheader

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Syracuse softball team swept Savannah State in non-conference doubleheader action on Tuesday, outscoring the Tigers 15-2 on the afternoon at the Tiger Softball Field.

The Orange (11-11) improved its record to .500 after an 8-2 victory in the first game and a 7-0 shutout victory in the latter game.
Â
Senior Corinne Ozanne and junior Alyssa Dewes posted .500 days at the plate, with Ozanne going 4-8 and Dewes finishing 2-4. Ozanne racked up eight RBI, two home runs, and one double in the span of two games, producing a 1.375 slugging percentage while tallying her 41st and 42nd career home runs. Dewes added one home run and two RBI with a 1.250 slugging percentage.

The rookies came up big in the two wins, with freshman Hannah Dossett and Andrea Bombace recording one home run apiece, tallying their third and fourth respective home runs of the season.

Freshman Aliyah Wade registered her first two career hits, logging a hit in both of the games. She also finished .500 at the plate, going 2-4 while scoring two runs.

Senior Jocelyn Cater got the win in the circle in the first game, tallying a season-high 15 strikeouts, just one strikeout shy of her career-best. Junior Sydney O'Hara finished the second game for the Orange, recording six strikeouts in just two innings of pitching. O'Hara also had a solid day at the plate, producing a triple and an RBI.

GAME 1
The Orange got on board early in the top of the first after two initial errors by the Tigers placed lead-off hitter Sammy Fernandez on base and eventually advanced her to third. After Maddi Doane reached base on a fielder's choice, the duo stole second and home plate with Corinne Ozanne at bat, gibing the Orange a 1-0 advantage.

The Tigers answered back in the bottom of the second on a home run past center field in the second at-bat, knotting the game up at one apiece.

Syracuse made it a two-run game in the top of the fifth, after Dossett sent one past the center field fence in the second at-bat of the inning. Soon thereafter, a fielder's choice play and a base hit set up Fernandez and Doane at second and first base. An RBI single by Ozanne in the subsequent at bat sent Fernandez to home plate, making it a 3-1 contest.

The top of the sixth inning proved to be the deciding factor in the game, as the Orange tacked on five runs off of five hits to make it an 8-1 ballgame, all while two outs stood on the board. The first came from a two-run home run to right field by Dewes, bringing Wade with her after a base hit by the freshman. Fernandez and Doane drew base hits in the next two at bats, setting up Ozanne for a three-run home run to left field.

The Tigers put one more run on the board in the bottom of the seventh off of an RBI single to center field, but it wasn't enough to shake the eight Orange runs.

GAME 2
The two teams held each other scoreless in the first two innings, but the Tigers couldn't keep the Orange down for long.

The top of the third inning started with Dewes reaching first after getting hit by a pitch, while a base hit up the middle sent Dewes to third after she stole second. Fernandez stole second right after with Ozanne at the plate, and she converted with a double right down the left field line, sending Fernandez and Dewes to home plate.

In the next at bat, O'Hara registered her first triple of the season to right field, setting up Ozanne for a meeting at home plate to make it 3-0.

With two outs on the board in the top of the sixth, Bombace sent one past the left field fence for a solo home run, placing the Orange at a 4-0 advantage.

Syracuse didn't stop the offensive surge, tacking on three more runs in the top on the seventh to finalize a 7-0 victory. After Wade tallied her second hit of the day, a fly out and a ground out advanced the freshman to third and home plate.

With two outs on the board once again, sophomore Rachel Burkhardt stroked a base hit to left field, and right after, Ozanne logged her second home run of the day to cap the Orange slugfest and a 7-0 victory.

Syracuse is back at it tomorrow, Mar. 16, taking on Charleston Southern in a single-game contest at 3 p.m.
