3/2/2016 10:55:00 AM | Track and Field
Six Syracuse student athletes – five men and one woman – have qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships across five events, to continue its run of success following the men's team wrapping up the ACC Championship last week.
The Orange haven't had more than one competitor at the meet since 2012, when Jarret Eaton won the National Championship in the 60-meter hurdles and Flings Owusu-Agyapong competed in the 60-meter dash.
The top-16 declared athletes nationally in each event compete in the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Sophomore Justyn Knight – who's in his first year of indoor eligibility - is Syracuse's top-ranked competitor, entering the 3000-meters as the third seed. Knight will see some familiar faces from the NCAA Cross Country Championships, where he took third, as Oregon's Edward Cheserek and Villanova's Patrick Tiernan, who finished first and second in cross country, also will be in the 3k field.
The Orange also have another top-five seed in the 5000-meters, with Colin Bennie entering as the fourth seed. Cheserek, Virginia Tech's Thomas Curtin and Tulsa's Marc Scott are the only runners to set better time's than Bennie's 13:38.81 to declare for the 5k.
'Cuse will double up in the mile, with Joel Hubbard and Adam Palamar, both of whom have set sub-3:59 times in the event this season set to compete as the 11th and 13th seeds respectively.
ACC Champion in the 60-meter hurdles, Freddie Crittenden III will continue Syracuse's long tradition of success in the 60-meter hurdles at the event as he's the third Syracuse competitor in the event in the last-five seasons, joining Eaton and Donald Pollitt. Crittenden enters as the eighth seed as his personal-best time of 7.70 seconds at the ACC Championships will serve as his qualifying time.
After missing the qualifying time by 0.001 seconds last season, Shaina Harrison will serve as the lone woman to represent the Orange in Birmingham, with a qualifying time of 7.29 seconds that puts her as the 13th-seeded student-athlete in the event.
The NCAA Indoor Championships will begin on Friday, March 11 in Birmingham, Alabama, with ESPN3 to broadcast the meet, beginning at 6:25 p.m. on Friday.
