TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Syracuse softball team came up short at No. 10 Florida State after a three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning put the Seminoles on top 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at JoAnne Graf Field.
Â
For a squad that owns the best batting average in the ACC and ranks second in hits, the Orange (12-14, 1-5 ACC) held the Seminoles (23-3, 3-0 ACC) to just one hit in the first five innings. Syracuse also didn't allow any runners to be put in scoring position during that span.
Â
After five and a half scoreless innings, the Seminoles waited until the bottom of the sixth inning to get things going, limiting the Orange to just one at bat to catch up to them. FSU tallied runs in three consecutive at bats, starting off with an RBI triple to center field that sent a runner at second home.
Â
In the next at bat with a runner on third, a play by Ozanne at first was enough to get the batter out, but wasn't enough to put out the runner at home. With two outs on the board, Seminole Jessica Warren sent one over the right field fence for a solo home run to top off a 3-0 victory.
Â
Sophomore Maddi Doane showed promise before that in the top of the sixth, stroking one deep into left field in the second at bat. That's as far as the Orange would get, however, before the Seminoles took the plate in their game-winning at bat.
Â
Sophomore Sammy Fernandez and junior Sydney O'Hara registered the other two Syracuse hits on the afternoon, with Fernandez's base hit coming in the top of the third and O'Hara's in the top of the fourth.
Â
Senior Jocelyn Cater tossed the first four innings, allowing just one Seminole hit and striking out one batter.
Â
Syracuse returns home after more than a month on the road with a home opener doubleheader against Niagara on Wednesday, Mar. 23. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
