'Cuse At The NBA Combine
5/13/2016 2:20:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Syracuse graduate Michael Gbinije and freshman Malachi Richardson are both busy in Chicago participating in the NBA Pre-Draft Combine.
The two former Orange teammates, each a key player in Syracuse's run to the 2016 Final Four, are in different situations at the Combine. Gbinije has completed his collegiate eligibility and hopes to interest an NBA team into selecting him in the upcoming NBA Draft. Richardson is taking advantage of a new rule which allows players who have not completed their eligibility to attend the combine but not lose their college eligibility as long as they have not signed with an agent.Â
In order to participate in the combine, a player has to earn an invitation. Gbinije and Richardson are two of approximately 70 players who are competing.
In addition to taking a battery of agility challenges and anthropometric testing, some of the invitees have played in televised scrimmages.
Richardson has until May 25 to determine whether he will keep his name in the Draft or return to Syracuse for his sophomore season.
Gbinije has had an impressive showing. His body fat rating of 5.4 percent was only exceeded by 15 participants. Gbinije measured 6-6.75 in sneakers and 204.6 pounds. He was also measured for standing reach (8-5), wingspan (6-7.5), hand width (9 inches) and hand length (8 inches).
Richardson checked in at 6-6.25 in sneakers and 199.6 pounds. Six participants exceeded Richardson's hand width (10 inches). He had a standing reach of 8-5.5, a wingspan of 7-0 and a hand length of 8.75 inches. His body fat was 7.0 percent.
In Thursday's scrimmage, Gbinije had 13 points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals. Richardson opted not to compete in the scrimmage.
NBA Teams also take the opportunity to interview the players at the combine. Each player is allotted up to 13 interviews. Richardson is scheduled for the full 13.Â
The NBA Pre-Draft Combine continues through May 15. Syracuse assistant coach Adrian Autry is on hand in Chicago and support of Gbinije and Richardson.
