Gait Takes Orange to the Next Level

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- After leading the Syracuse women's lacrosse team to its fifth consecutive Final Four, Syracuse All-American and lacrosse Hall of Famer Gary Gait has developed the Orange into one of the top teams in the NCAA.Â
Gait captured the 150th win of his career with the Orange's most recent 12-11 quarterfinal overtime victory over USC on Saturday. In his nine years at the helm, Gait has led the Orange to the national semifinals seven times, which includes this weekend's trip to Philadelphia, Pa. when the squad takes on two-time defending National Champion Maryland.Â
Since taking over the helm of the program, Gait has led Syracuse to an overall record of 150-47, two appearances in the national championship game, seven entries in the national semifinals and one trip the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. In addition, the Orange has claimed six conference regular-season titles and three conference tournament crowns.
Syracuse has competed in the National Title game twice under Gait, which came in the 2012 and 2014 seasons. The Orange were defeated by Maryland in 2014 by the final score of 15-12 and lost to Northwestern 8-6 in 2012.Â
During Gait's impressive tenure as head coach, the Orange have seen some impressive players in the lineup. Under Gait, Syracuse has had four different players named as a Tewaaraton finalist. Katie Rowan, Michelle Tumolo, Alyssa Murray and most recently Kayla Treanor have all been finalists for the award.Â
The Orange have had four IWLCA Players of the Year, which includes two-time award winner Treanor. With Gait at the helm, Treanor has had the most illustrious career at Syracuse, becoming one-of-five Orange athletes to be named as a First Team All-American all four years as a student-athlete.
Gait will look to get his team over the hump this weekend when the Orange take on Maryland on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Talen Energy Stadium in Chester, Pa.
Gait is a 10-time NCAA champion, having won three titles as a player for the Orange (1988-90) and seven as an assistant women's lacrosse coach at the University of Maryland (1995-01).
As a player, Gait enjoyed success at every level. While at Syracuse he helped the Orange to three straight NCAA titles, earned first-team All-America honors three times and received the Player of the Year award twice. Gait's dominance continued at the professional level as he earned league MVP honors in both the National Lacrosse League and Major League Lacrosse. On the international scene, Gait has been recognized as one of the sport's best players, earning International Lacrosse Federation (ILF) All-World Team honors.
