
Gennaro Places Third at U.S. Olympic Trials

Gennaro and Aghai placed third in the men's pairs
PRINCETON JUNCTION, N.J. – Former Syracuse University men's rower Mike Gennaro '11 and his partner Dariush Aghai placed third in the final of the men's pairs on Wednesday morning at the United States Olympic Team Trials II at the Princeton Rowing Center.
In a hard-fought race, Gennaro and Aghai covered the 2,000-meter course in 6:29.55. USRowing Training Center – Princeton teammates Nareg Guregian and Anders Weiss won the final and will represent the United States in the men's pairs at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Despite the final outcome, Gennaro and Aghai put up a solid showing at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials II. The pair advanced to Tuesday's semifinals after recording the top time in heats on Monday. On Tuesday, the duo finished in second place in their semifinal race, registering the second-best time of the day.
Gennaro went to the 2012 Olympic Games in London as an alternate. It marked the 13th consecutive Olympic Games that the Orange men's rowing program was represented with either an alumnus rowing, alternate, or coach.
The Havertown, Pa. native stroked the Syracuse first varsity eight crew for three seasons, helping the team to a sixth-place showing at the 2010 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championship Regatta.
