Margo Malone and Shaylyn Tuite finished 18th and 19th respectively in the women's 10,000-meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Thursday, to complete day two of the event for the Orange.
Malone finished in 34:06.09 and Tuite was right behind her in 34:10.59, while Arkansas' Dominique Scott was crowned NCAA Champion in 32:35.69. Both Malone and Tuite earned Honorable Mention All-America honors for their performance in the meet.
Malone stuck with the lead pack for nearly 20 laps, spending much of that time in the top-five, but fell off the lead pack with about 10 laps to go. Tuite climbed her way to the lead pack early in the race, but dropped into the chase pack near the midway point of the race.
The race was the third NCAA 10k Championship for Malone to conclude the career of one of the most-successful women in the history of the Syracuse track and field programs. In addition to her three times qualifying to Eugene, Malone was a USTFCCCA First Team All-American last season in the event, after earning the 2015 ACC Championship in the 10k. She was also a two-time podium finisher in cross country at the ACC Championships.
The meet was the first NCAA Championship for Tuite on the track, who experienced a breakout season from cross country through the track seasons this year, culminating in posting one of the top-12 times in the 10k nationally this season to get to Eugene.
Three men will conclude the NCAA Championships tomorrow, with Adam Palamar (1500-meters), Freddie Crittenden III (110-meter hurdles) and Justyn Knight (5000-meters) will take to the track in their respective finals.
