Hehir Kicks Off Olympic Trials Friday
7/1/2016 5:17:00 PM | Track and Field
Martin Hehir's 10,000-meter race on Friday in Eugene, Oregon will kick off a busy week for Syracuse student-athletes and alums at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
A two-time All-American in cross country, including a top-10 finish at the NCAA Championship this season, Hehir will race at 9:30 p.m. on NBC, but will be just the first of many to compete for a spot in Rio.
2012 track alum Flings Owusu-Agyapong has already locked up her spot in the 100-meter dash for Ghana, Katie Zaferes will represent the United States on the triathlon team and numerous other Syracuse competitors look to join her representing the U.S., Canada and Nigeria.
Sarah Pagano, who owns both the indoor and outdoor 5k records at SU and was the 2012 BIG EAST Champion will be next to run for SU, competing in the 10k on Saturday, July 2. That race will also be shown on NBC, shortly after 2 p.m. on the east coast. Pagano will likely double up as well as she's declared in the 5k later in the week. She'll race again on Saturday, July 10 at 7:28 p.m. eastern.
As always, Syracuse will have a loaded field in the 110-meter hurdles, highlighted by 2012 NCAA 60-meter hurdles champion Jarret Eaton, who holds the sixth fastest time heading into the event. He'll be joined by Freddie Crittenden III, who is one of the top-collegian performers at the trials after picking up First Team All-America honors at the NCAA Championships in the event this spring. Recent graduate Donald Pollitt II rounds out the field for Syracuse. Pollitt was a two-time NCAA qualifier in the 110-hurdles as a member of the Orange. Those heats are scheduled to get underway on Friday, July 8 at 6 p.m. eastern.
In addition to the U.S. trials, Syracuse will have plenty of representation in Canada as well.
Justyn Knight and Adam Palamar will both race in the 1500-meters. Both are coming off impressive races after the season, with Knight beating U.S. standout Galen Rupp among others in Portland last week and Palamar taking third in a 1500-meter race in Edmonton with a time of 3:40.26 two weeks ago.
The 1500-meters kicks off on July 8 at 3:40 p.m. eastern.
Besides Knight and Palamar, one more current student-athlete hopes to represent Canada in Rio. Tia Thevenin will be competing in the 100-meter hurdles at 3 p.m. eastern on Sunday.
Jillian Drouin '08 will join Thevenin in the 100-meter hurdles, but in addition will compete in the long jump, high jump and shot put, hoping to make it to the Olympics.
Michael LeBlanc, a 2010 'Cuse grad who won the BIG EAST Championship in the 100-meter dash during his final season at SU, will be racing in the same event this week at the Olympic trials.
Another SU track and field alum expected to make their way to Rio, is Uhunoma Osazuwa, a 2012 Olympian from Nigeria in the heptathlon, is expected to compete for her country once again after recently setting the nation's record at the African Track and Field Championship.
In addition to Zaferes and Owusu-Agyapong, Syracuse will also be represented by Alyssa Manley (field hockey), Natalie Mastracci (rowing), Jim Boeheim (basketball) and Carmelo Anthony (basketball), as they've already been named to Olympic rosters in their respective sports.
