SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange football team opened its 2016 preseason camp on Saturday morning with a two-hour practice in shorts and helmets at the Hookway Fields Complex.
Saturday marked the first of 24 camp practice sessions before the team moves into preparation mode for the season opener against Colgate at the Carrier Dome Friday, Sept. 2 on ESPN3.
After 15 practices in the spring spent learning new offensive and defensive systems, first-year head coach Dino Babers was pleased Saturday at the development he's seen take place the last few months.
"I thought the effort was really good today," Babers said. "I thought the energy was fantastic. I didn't think they were on Practice 16. I thought they were way beyond that. We still have techniques and fundamentals to work on, but I thought that was good."
The team broke up into position groups and participated in individual and group drills during the first portion of the workout. There were several big plays on both sides of the ball during team periods later on. One of the highlights was a 70-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Zack Mahoney to receiver Jamal Custis.
"I thought it was kind of balanced today. There were some plays made by the offense and there were some opportunities that were missed by the offense. There were some turnovers for touchdowns," Babers said.
In addition to the physical and mental development of his players, Babers was also impressed with their conditioning.
"It's Day 1 and we finished practice with no running afterwards, so conditioning is really good," Babers said. "Nobody was over a trash can at the end of practice, so that was a good thing."
#CuseCamp16 continues Sunday with another morning practice at Hookway.
Season and individual game tickets for Orange football are on sale now online, by phone (888-DOMETIX) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B). Season tickets start at $99 ($16.50 per game) with lower-level seats in the end zones available for as little as $125. Single-game tickets start at $20 for non-conference games against Colgate and USF, $25 for the Louisville and NC State games, and $30 for the Virginia Tech and Florida State contests.
Notes: Offensive players and specialists wore orange jerseys, while the defense was in white. Quarterbacks wore black ... Two walk-ons have joined the program – running back Winston Lee and punter Nolan Cooney. Lee was a sprinter for the Orange track team last year and placed fifth in the 60-meter dash at the ACC Indoor Championship. Cooney hails from Rhode Island and completed a post-graduate year at Bridgton Academy in Maine.
