SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After trading goals in regulation, Syracuse women's soccer team and No. 20 Notre Dame ended the match tied 1-1 at SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon in front of a season-high 875 Orange-clad fans.
The Orange move to 7-1-2 on the season and open Atlantic Coast Conference play 0-0-1. The Fighting Irish are now 5-1-3 on the season and also 0-0-1 in the ACC.
Junior Eva Gordon put Syracuse on the board in the first half with her third goal of the season. In the 33rd minute, Syracuse was awarded a corner kick. Jessica Vigna sent the ball flying into the box and Stephanie Skilton was able to get her head on the ball. The Notre Dame goalkeeper made a play on it and knocked the ball down to the ground. Gordon put a foot on the ball and sent it into the goal.
Notre Dame came out in the second half looking for an equalizer and found it at the 53-minute mark. The Irish sent a corner kick into the box and Taylor Klawunder came out with the goal after the ball bounced around in front of the goal.
Across the stat sheet, the match was evenly played. Notre Dame held a 16-14 shot advantage and had one more shot on goal than the Orange (7-6).
Goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan had six saves in the match, a season-high for the junior. Before the Notre Dame goal in the second half, Brosnan and the defense had not given up a goal in 353:44. The Irish tested Brosnan with an array of shots in the first and second halves. On multiple occasions, Brosnan came out to intercept crosses by the Notre Dame attacking front. Minutes after Notre Dame scored, the Irish looked to go ahead with a strong shot from about 25 yards out. The ball was headed for the top of the goal, just below the crossbar, but a jumping Brosnan was able to get a few fingers on the ball to send it in the air and out-of-bounds.
Gordon and Sydney Brackett looked dangerous in the Orange attack throughout the game. Gordon finished with three shots on frame and Brackett with two.
The Orange now have a five-game unbeaten streak dating back to a win at Cornell on Sept. 4. Syracuse owns a 4-1-1 record at home this season at SU Soccer Stadium. Today's tie was the first in series history between Syracuse and Notre Dame.
Syracuse will go on the road next week with matches at No. 13 Clemson (7-2) and Miami (7-3).
