Sand selected to All-Tournament team
LINCOLN, Neb. – The Syracuse volleyball team closed out the Nebraska Invite falling in straight sets to Iowa State (14-25, 15-25, 21-25) in Lincoln, Nebraska at the Devaney Center.
Junior libero Belle Sand joined six other players selected to the Nebraska Invite All-Tournament team.
Sophomore Anastasiya Gorelina led 'Cuse in kills on the night with 10. Fellow sophomore Santita Ebangwese added six to the attacking effort.
Ebangwese was on fire at the net, tallying five block assists. The pair of junior Leah Levert and redshirt sophomore Christina Oyawale added four assisted stops apiece.
The Orange (0-4, 0-0 ACC) took the first point of the game after a Cyclone attacking error, but then gave up an attacking error of their own end to even the score at one. A pair of kills from Gorelina and Ebangwese evened the score at four apiece as junior Belle Sand went back to serve.
Sand offered up a serve that led to an attacking error from Iowa State (3-2, 0-0 Big-12), giving the Orange their second lead of the game, but a service error from Syracuse evened the score at five.
The Cyclones took a slight lead of two points, but a second kill from Gorelina brought the score within just one point (6-7). Iowa State continued on their hot streak, extending the lead to six points (12-6), but a kill from freshman Kendra Lukacs closed the gap by a point. A pair of attack errors from Iowa State brought the score to 12-9 in the middle of the first set.
A four-point run from the Cyclones bought them up, 16-9, but the run was ended by a service error. The pair fought back-and-forth through the next few plays, heading into the final points of the first set with Iowa State on top, 21-13.
A kill from Gorelina brought the score up to 14-22, but the Cyclones were able to put away three in a row to close out the set 25-14 over the Orange.
Iowa State grabbed a quick 3-0 run to start the second set, but the Orange answered back with a kill from Weaver. A nearly even match through the next 17 total points, Syracuse trailed the Cyclones in an 8-9 run, bringing the score to 9-13 Iowa State.
The Orange kept the score within four points, as a kill from Gorelina and an attack error from the Cyclones left the game at 15-11 Cyclones.
Iowa State went on a 10-4 run to close out set two ahead of the Orange, 25-15.
'Cuse kept the game within one point in the beginning of the third, eventually tying at four with the Cyclones. Iowa State went on a 3-0 run to surge ahead, 7-4, bringing the Orange to call a timeout.
The Orange came out with the first point following the timeout thanks to an attacking error from the Cyclones. Iowa State answered back with a kill, but Syracuse's Weaver matched the kill to bring the score to 6-8 Iowa State.
Syracuse tied the game at 11 and again at 12, but were unable to keep up the momentum that Iowa State was bringing, as the Cyclones went on a four-point run to bring the score to 16-12.
The pair fought back-and-forth until the Cyclones took a lead to sit in front, 22-16. 'Cuse battled back and earned a three-point run (19-22), but Iowa State was able to complete a 3-2 run to close out the set, 25-21.
The Orange head home to host the Syracuse Tournament next Friday, Sept. 9 and Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Women's Building. 'Cuse welcomes Hofstra, Siena and Penn State for three head-to-head games over the two days.
