Peterson and Sykes are the nation's top-scoring backcourt
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After its run to the 2016 NCAA Tournament final, the Syracuse women's basketball program is on the national map, like never before. This season, senior guard Alexis Peterson and redshirt senior guard Brittney Sykes are showing the country that they are America's best backcourt.
Heading into its latest game, Peterson and Sykes are averaging 40.6 points per game, the nation's top-scoring backcourt duo. In addition, Syracuse is only one of two programs nationally to boast two players ranked in the top 50 in the country in scoring this year.
It's been a long road back to the top for Sykes, following two season-ending injuries, but after a strong postseason in 2016, Sykes reestablished herself among the country's elite talents.
Peterson took a back seat as a freshman, averaging a mere 3.0 points and 1.0 rebound per contest. She emerged as the team's top scorer following Sykes' first season-ending injury, earning All-ACC honors as a sophomore.
The 2015-16 campaign marked the return of Sykes, but also the first time the two would truly play together. It took some time for the pair to click, but in the final 18 games of the season their potential was on full display. Peterson (17.3) and Sykes (12.1) combined to score more than 40 percent of the team's total points in its final 18 contests, helping the squad to 16 victories.
