SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The 'Hoops for the Stars' program will be highlighted on March 4 with an on-court presentation at the Carrier Dome to honor more than 150 area youth at the Syracuse University men's basketball game against Georgia Tech. Similar events were held on January 24 when Syracuse hosted Wake Forest and February 4 when Syracuse welcomed Virginia to the Dome.
For the ninth year in a row, Syracuse University and National Grid Foundation continue to partner to provide positive reinforcement, recognition of improved academic performance and attendance in school, a decrease in negative behavior, and positive contributions to the community. The program underscores a shared commitment by Syracuse University Athletics, National Grid Foundation and the Syracuse City School District to work together in enriching the educational and life experience of area youth.
"We are thrilled to be able to partner with the National Grid Foundation in support of the Syracuse City School District," said John Wildhack, Syracuse University Director of Athletics. "This program gives us the opportunity to help encourage and reward area students."
Through a National Grid Foundation commitment of $35,000 this year, Syracuse University Athletics is providing tickets to 12 men's basketball home games. Ticket recipients include more than 2,300 student achievers from eight middle schools in the Syracuse City School District and a parent or guardian to select Orange Men Basketball games.
"Through this partnership with Syracuse University, the Hoops for the Stars program promotes academic achievement and encourages students to reach their highest potential," said Melanie Littlejohn, Board Member, National Grid Foundation. "At the close of another great Hoops for the Stars season, we are especially excited about the 'Rising Star' award. This is a special occasion to honor students for extraordinary accomplishments. While all the children are bright stars, we want to recognize the most outstanding student achievers."
