
Syracuse Met Tough Competition in ITA Kickoff Weekend

ANN ARBOR, MICH. – The Syracuse women's tennis team dropped two matches in the ITA Kickoff event hosted by Michigan this weekend.
The Kickoff features the top teams from around the country competing for a spot in the ITA Indoor National Championship held in February. Each location hosts four teams and the team that is able to win two matches over the weekend, advances to the tournament. The host team, Michigan, was the team who won both matches in Ann Arbor, defeating Denver and No. 24 Mississippi State.
Syracuse opened the weekend with No. 24 Mississippi State on Saturday. The Bulldogs clinched a 4-1 win against the Orange, claiming the doubles point and winning singles points at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 spots.
On Sunday, 'Cuse took on Denver in the Consolation Match, losing, 4-0, to the Pioneers. Denver won the doubles point and clinched with singles wins at the No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 spots.
Newcomer Miranda Ramirez fared well, picking up a 6-3, 6-1 win on Saturday against Mississippi State at the two spot. Her match on Sunday was going into a third set before it was called off due to Denver clinching the win.
The Orange will be back in action on Feb. 4 when they take on Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia in Charlottesville, Va.
