SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's soccer team (7-5-2) recorded its second ACC victory of the season in a 1-0 win over Miami (4-8-0) on a rainy Wednesday afternoon at SU Soccer Stadium. Sophomore Taylor Bennett scored the sole goal of the game in the 21st minute of the match.
"It's great to get three points, especially at home, and it was great to have the fans out, even though it was raining," said head coach Phil Wheddon. "We need to keep learning lessons in every game that we play and keep moving forward."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The match began with a hard-fought battle on defense as neither team recorded a shot through the first 20 minutes of action. In the 21st minute, Bennett stopped a clearing attempt by a Miami defender and booted the ball at the goal from 40 yards out. The Miami goalkeeper got a hand on the ball but it deflected into the back of the goal, giving Syracuse the 1-0 lead.
OF NOTE
Senior keeper Courtney Brosnan recorded her 24th career win with the victory over Miami, earning her sole possession of third place for career wins. She also tallied her 18th career shutout, ranking third in program history for shutouts.
Syracuse notched 11 shots against Miami, marking the seventh time this season that the Orange have recorded double-digit shots. When tallying 10+ shots, 'Cuse holds a 6-0-1 record, with the tie coming against No. 21 Connecticut.
UP NEXT
Syracuse hits the road for a conference matchup with NC State on Saturday, Oct. 14. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. and the game will air on ACC Network Extra.
