'Cuse Defeats Pittsburgh for First ACC Victory
10/5/2017 10:35:00 PM | Women's Soccer
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Syracuse women's soccer team (6-4-2, 1-2-1) tallied its first conference win of the season after defeating the Pittsburgh Panthers (3-7-3, 0-4-1) 2-0, Thursday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field. Senior defender Alana O'Neill recorded her first goal of the season in the 24th minute of the game.
"I thought we played a very good first half. We moved the ball well and we were effective in our passing, connecting all over the field," said head coach Phil Wheddon. "It's tremendous to get three points in the ACC especially away from home and I'm very proud. It's a good win but we have to make sure that we are ready for our contest against Notre Dame on Sunday."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Sophomore Sydney Brackett got things going early for the Orange after picking up a rebound and burying the ball in the lower right corner in the fourth minute of action. Brackett paces Syracuse with five goals on the season.
O'Neill extended the lead for the Orange with her first goal of the season, a tap into the bottom left corner of the net to make it 2-0, 'Cuse. Freshman Kate Hostage earned her first career assist on the O'Neill goal.
OF NOTE
Senior keeper Courtney Brosnan continues to climb spots in the record book, tallying her 23rd career win, tying her for third in program history with Shannon Myers ('04). Brosnan ranks third in both career shutouts (17) and career saves (302), surpassing the 300 career saves mark in Thursday's game against Pittsburgh.
The effort in goal by Brosnan was evident as the Orange were outshot 15-8 in the game but the senior kept Syracuse in the contest. This marks the first time this season that the Orange came out victorious when being outshot by their opponent.
UP NEXT
The Orange travel to South Bend, Ind. to take on Notre Dame on Sunday, Oct. 8. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be aired on ACC Network Extra.
