Orange Face 2-0 Defeat at Notre Dame
10/8/2017 4:32:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Syracuse closed out a three-game road stint Sunday afternoon at Notre Dame where the Fighting Irish handed the Orange a 2-0 defeat thanks to a pair of second half goals. Senior keeper Courtney Brosnan tallied her second double-digit save effort of the season after stopping 10 shots in goal against the Irish.
"I thought we showed tremendous character and spirit in the first half," said head coach Phil Wheddon. "I'm really proud of our fight and resiliency. We had everyone contribute on the field and we will learn some valuable lessons from this game."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Notre Dame struck just over 20 minutes into the second half when Jennifer Westendorf capitalized on a deflection to bury the ball in the back right corner of the goal. The Orange remained aggressive, taking chances to create scoring opportunities, but the Fighting Irish capped the game with a one-on-one goal that just beat Brosnan in the 87th minute of play.
OF NOTE
Brosnan now ranks second in program history for career saves with 312. She trails only Eliza Bennett-Hattan ('09) who posted 331 saves in her four years with the Orange.
COACH'S THOUGHTS
"We played a very dangerous Notre Dame team but we must do a better job of taking care of the ball," said Wheddon. "We had too many unforced turnovers and, at the end of the day, that was the difference."
UP NEXT
Syracuse returns home to host the Miami Hurricanes in a game that was rescheduled to Oct. 11 at 1 p.m. due to Hurricane Irma. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and admission to all home games is free. Syracuse will be partnering with United Way to raise donations for the hurricane relief efforts.
