Second-Half Surge Leads Orange

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse (3-0) opened up the second half with a 15-0 run to pull away from Texas Southern (0-4) in an 80-67 victory Saturday night at the Carrier Dome in the Hoophall Miami Invitational. Sophomore Tyus Battle posted a game-high 21 points and added 3 steals.
Graduate Geno Thorpe scored 11 of his 13 points in the first half, junior Frank Howard recorded 12 points with eight assists and freshman Bourama Sidibe finished with 11 points.
How It Was Decided
Texas Southern jumped out to an early 7-2 lead. Syracuse answered with five consecutive points from Battle and a layup from Sidibe to go in front.
With the game tied at 24, Thorpe hit back-to-back three-pointers to give the Orange a 30-24 lead. The teams traded layups and free throws, then a Thorpe layup gave Syracuse a 35-27 advantage.
Thorpe finished the first half with 11 points, connecting on 5-of-6 shots from the field, and the Orange took a 38-30 lead into halftime.
Battle knocked down a three, followed by an alley-oop from Howard to Paschal Chukwu. Battle scored the next six points for the Orange, Marek Dolezaj added two free throws and Howard's layup capped off the run to open the second half.
Texas Southern trimmed the Syracuse lead down to 12 with 5:46 remaining but the Orange answered with a 7-2 run to extend the advantage. Howard hit a three-pointer followed by a layup from Oshae Brissett. The Tigers hit two free throws and Brissett's dunk put Syracuse in front, 76-59, with 3:01 remaining in the game.
Of Note
Dolezaj finished with 10 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. The freshman was just a rebound and three assists away from posting a triple-double.
Syracuse outscored Texas Southern 34-1 in bench points on the night. The trio of Dolezaj, Thorpe and Sidibe combined for all 34 points of the bench.
Donte Clark led the Tigers with 20 points and five assists. He shot 5-of-13 from the field and 7-of-7 from the free throw stripe.
