SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Tyus Battle posted 25 points and junior Frank Howard added a career-high 18 points with six assists to lead Syracuse (4-0) to a 74-50 victory over Oakland (2-2) Monday night at the Carrier Dome in the Hoophall Miami Invitational.
Junior Paschal Chukwu finished with career-highs of 12 points, 11 rebounds and eights blocks and freshman Oshae Brissett recorded 11 points and nine boards.
How It Was Decided
Oakland jumped out to an early 9-6 lead, but a 12-0 run pushed Syracuse in front. Brissett hit a jumper followed by back-to-back layups from Chukwu and Brissett. Battle drained two free throws, then knocked down a jumper, and a Chukwu layup capped off the run.
The Golden Grizzlies narrowed the gap to six, then Battle single-handedly went on a 9-4 run. Over the stretch, he hit three jumpers and a three-point field goal to extend the Orange lead to 29-20. A Brissett jumper, Howard layup and Brissett dunk extended the Syracuse lead to 15 with 4:25 remaining in the first half.
Battle finished the first half with 16 points, shooting 6-of-11 from the field and the Orange led 39-25 at the break.
A Kendrick Nunn three-pointer trimmed the Oakland deficit to 10 with 9:22 to play. Syracuse answered with a 19-4 run to open up a 25-point advantage. Howard and Battle combined for 16 points during the stretch.
Syracuse finished the game on a 13-5 run fueled by six points from Geno Thorpe and five from Howard.
Of Note
On top of Chukwu's career night, the center is the first Syracuse player to record at least eight blocks in a single game since Fab Melo blocked 10 shots against Seton Hall on Dec. 28, 2011.
The Syracuse defense was dominant once again. It recorded 15 blocks, 12 steals and held Oakland to 18-of-59 (30.5 percent) shooting from the floor.
Martez Walker and Nunn led the Golden Grizzlies with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
