SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange (5-0) defeated Vanderbilt (1-5), 84-78, in game two of the Paradise Jam behind a 25-point outing by redshirt junior Miranda Drummond. Syracuse posted a 52-point second half, 16 of which came from Drummond, who was 6-for-7 in the second part of the game.
'Cuse wraps up the Paradise Jam on Saturday when the team takes on host-school George Washington at 3:30 p.m. The game will be streamed on FloHoops, while Brian Higgins ('04) has the call on ESPN Radio 97.7 or at Cuse.TV.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The Orange got off to a slow start, trailing for a majority of the first quarter until a 3-point bucket by Jasmine Nwajei tied the game at 14 with 2:10 left in the frame. With time expiring in the quarter, freshman Amaya Finklea-Guity received the ball from Gabrielle Cooper and laid it in to give 'Cuse the 16-14 lead after 10 minutes of play.
The momentum swung back-and-forth between the teams as Syracuse and Vandy exchanged the lead five different times throughout the second quarter. At the 3:25 mark, Drummond converted on an and-1 opportunity after dumping in a fast-break layup to give Syracuse the 32-31 edge. Vanderbilt responded with a layup of its own to take the narrow 33-32 lead into halftime.
It was all threes in the third quarter as the teams combined for 12 3-pointers in the frame, six for each team. Drummond poured in four of the six 3-pointers for the Orange and sparked a 12-0 run that propelled Syracuse to a 49-41 lead at 5:58 in the third.
The 3-point parade continued into the fourth quarter as the teams each knocked down a 3-pointer to open scoring in the final 10 minutes. Down one with 1:23 left in the game, Tiana Mangakahia drove to the rim to give Syracuse the 77-76 advantage. The Commodores charged down the court with a chance to take the lead but freshman Digna Strautmane came up with a huge block in front of the basket for the Orange.
A 3-point play by Raven Fox and free throws by Mangakahia and Strautmane sealed the 84-78 victory for Syracuse.
OF NOTE
The Orange move to 5-0 on the season for the first time since 2013, when Syracuse opened the season 8-0. This is the sixth time that Syracuse has started the season 5-0 under the direction of head coach Quentin Hillsman.
Mangakahia set a new program record for single-game assists with 17 against Vanderbilt. She dished out nine assists in the first half alone. The previous record was set by Libby McNulty on Dec. 4, 1982 when she recorded 15 assists against Howard. She also broke the Paradise Jam three-game tournament record for assists, amassing 31 assists through two games.
Drummond tied her career-high with 25 points against Vanderbilt and recorded a career-best 10 field goals made, shooting 10-for-17 from the field. The forward has tallied double-digit outings in five consecutive games but this is the first time that she has eclipsed the 20-point mark this season.

Q'S THOUGHTS
"If there was a basketball game that could have ended in a tie, it would have been this one," said Hillsman. "There were 24 combined threes made between both teams. We played a really tough game and we really wanted to get the pace up and play faster in the second half."
