Strong Second Half Powers Syracuse Past SCSU

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After trailing by five at halftime, Syracuse outscored Southern Connecticut State 60-30 in the second half and ran away with an 84-59 victory. Sophomore Tyus Battle and junior Frank Howard combined for 39 points and Battle added six rebounds.
Freshman Oshae Brissett chipped in with 16 points and five rebounds and freshman Bourama Sidibe added eight points with 12 boards and five blocks.
How It Was Decided
Southern Connecticut State scored the first 11 points of the contest and opened up a 27-12 advantage.
Syracuse answered with a 12-2 run to close the half. Battle started the stretch with a three-pointer, followed by an Owl layup. Howard connected on a jumper and sank two free throws and Battle scored the final five points of the half. The Orange trailed 29-24 heading into the break.
In the second staff, Brissett and Howard hit back-to-back three-pointers to tie the game at 30. SCSU converted two free throws, followed by a Brissett layup. Howard scored a layup on the following possession to give the Orange its first lead of the game. Howard and Battle combined for the next seven points to stretch the Syracuse lead to nine.
Later in the half, graduate Geno Thorpe drained a three, Sidibe converted a layup, redshirt freshman Matthew Moyer dunked and freshman Marek Dolezaj sank two free throws to give the Orange a 68-49 lead.
An 11-0 run in the final minutes gave Syracuse an 84-57 lead, its largest of the game.
Of Note
After shooting 8-of-31 (25.8 percent) in the first half, the Orange turned it around after the break. Syracuse converted 20-of-35 shots (57.1 percent) in the second half and finished the game shooting 42.4 percent from the field.
Syracuse posted a double-digit block total for the second straight exhibition game. Led by five blocks from Sidibe and three from Paschal Chukwu, the Orange finished with 11.
Isaiah McLeod had 18 points for the Owls. Joey Wallace, the son of former Orange standout John Wallace, finished with eight points and six rebounds for Southern Connecticut State.
