Syracuse Surges Past Cornell in Season Opener

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Tyus Battle scored a game-high 18 points and freshman Oshae Brissett added 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead Syracuse past Cornell, 77-45, Friday night in the season opener for both sides at the Carrier Dome.
The game featured the collegiate debut of Cornell freshman Jimmy Boeheim playing on Boeheim Court against his father, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim. Jimmy Boeheim opened the game's scoring with a 3-pointer and finished with 11 points and five rebounds.
How It Was Decided
Syracuse trailed 5-4 early on and used a 12-1 run to jump ahead. Howard sank a floater and a three-pointer, followed by five Syracuse free throws and a layup by freshman Marek Dolezaj.
Orange newcomers Thorpe, Brissett, Dolezaj and freshman Bourama Sidibe combined to score the last 12 points of the first half and Syracuse entered the break leading 33-22.
A 19-4 run to open up the second half put the Orange in front, 52-26. Battle fueled the Syracuse run with 10 points.
Back-to-back three pointers from Thorpe and Dolezaj, followed by a Thorpe layup pushed the Orange lead to 71-43.
Two-point buckets from walk-ons Patrick Herlihy, Braedon Bayer and Shaun Belbey capped off the victory.
Of Note
The Syracuse defense was dominant, holding Cornell to 13-of-52 (25 percent) from the field. The Orange finished with 12 steals and six blocks on the night.
Syracuse graduate Geno Thorpe posted 12 points and junior Frank Howard finished with nine points, four assists and three rebounds. Redshirt freshman Matt Moyer tied Brissett for rebound honors with 10 boards.
The win gave Syracuse it's 14th straight, season-opening victory. It also extended the Orange's winning streak against Cornell to 38 games and upped Coach Boeheim's record in campaign beginners to 38-4.
