'Cuse Meets WVU in NIVC Quarterfinals

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Syracuse women's volleyball team travels to West Virginia to face the Mountaineers in the quarterfinals of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) on Monday, Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. The winner of Monday's matchup will advance to play Ole Miss in the tournament's semifinal round.

Pathway to the Quarterfinals
Syracuse (22-13) defeated Albany in the first round, 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-21), on Nov. 30. Santita Ebangwese led Syracuse with 13 kills and six blocks. Ella Saada added 11 kills with a match-high 24 digs and Kendra Lukacs totaled 10 kills to go along with 12 digs. Jalissa Trotter dished out a match-leading 41 assists.
The Orange swept Towson the following day in the second round (25-22, 25-22, 25-23). Ebangwese finished with a match-high 16 kills and six blocks to pace SyraÂcuse. Amber Witherspoon totaled 11 kills with four blocks and Anastasiya Gorelina added eight kills. Trotter posted a match-high 43 assists and Belle Sand added a team-high 12 digs.
What to Know About WVU
West Virginia (20-12) received an automatic qualifier into the NIVC from the Big 12 Conference. The Mountaineers finished with a 6-10 record in conference play and were the highest remaining team in the Big 12 that did not receive an NCAA Tournament bid. West Virginia reached the quarterfinals with two three-set victories over Maryland East Shore and Temple.
Through 32 matches, Payton Caffrey leads the Mountaineers in kills with 417, sophomore setter Erin Slinde leads in assists with 915, Alexa Hasting leads in digs with 313, and Mia Swanegan leads the team in blocking at 140.0. Caffrey also leads the squad with 54 service aces on the year. As a team, West Virginia is hitting .227 and holding its opponents to a .191 clip, while out-blocking its opponents, 261.5-256.0.
The Mountaineers lead the all-time series, 14-12, over the Orange and won the last meeting between the two schools in 2011. The last Syracuse victory over West Virginia occurred in 2010.
