Orange Face 5-0 Setback to Clarkson
12/5/2017 10:19:00 PM | Ice Hockey
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's hockey team faced a 5-0 setback against reigning National Champion No. 3 Clarkson, Tuesday night at Tennity Ice Pavilion. The Orange totaled 19 shots on goal in the contest but could not find the back of the net.
"I thought we matched up pretty well for 16 and a half minutes in the first period," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "But we didn't do what we were supposed to do in the neutral zone and it led to two of their goals. It's going to take a concerted and consistent effort from our whole group for 60 minutes."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The teams battled throughout the first period, taking a 0-0 tie all the way down to the 16:27 mark before Amanda Titus recorded the first goal for the Golden Knights. Clarkson capitalized on the shift in momentum, scoring two more goals in the final minutes of the third period to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
A pair of goals in the second period put the score at 5-0, where it remained for the rest of the game. Senior Alysha Burriss had the best scoring opportunities for the Orange on two breakaway chances, but goalie Shea Tiley was a wall in front of the net for the Golden Knights.
OF NOTE
Sophomore Ady Cohen made a relief appearance between the pipes for the Orange, stopping 23 of 25 shots faced in the second and third periods. The Florida native stood on her head as Syracuse was down a man for four straight minutes in the third, making 10 saves in the four-minute span.
UP NEXT
The Orange hit the road to face-off with conference rival Mercyhurst on Dec. 8 and 9. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
