
Orange Split on Opening Day

‘Cuse defeats East Carolina, falls to #12 Georgia
ATHENS, Ga. – Syracuse claimed its 11th program season-opening victory on Friday before falling, 6-5, to #12 Georgia (2-0), as the Orange (1-1) defeated East Carolina (1-1), 9-6. The win marks the second over the Pirates in the all-time series.
Game 1
Trailing 4-1 at the top of the third frame, junior Faith Cain slapped a double to bring freshman pinch runner Toni Martin through home base before being caught out at third.
Senior Sydney O'Hara followed up with a 2 RBI double to tie the game, 4-4, after bringing sophomores Bryce Holmgren and Alicia Hansen in to score.
Marking the first home run of the season for the Orange, sophomore Andrea Bombace slammed the ball outside the back wall for a 2 RBI homer to take the lead, 6-4, in the top of the fourth.
After letting up two Pirate runs in the bottom of the fourth, Bombace returned to home plate to register a 2 RBI single to bring sophomore Hannah Dossett and O'Hara to home plate, taking an 8-6 lead.
The Orange defense came to play in the fifth and sixth innings as Syracuse didn't allow a run in either frame.
A single from O'Hara brought Holmgren in for the ninth Orange run of the game, but the Pirates held Syracuse to just one run and closed out the inning trailing, 9-6.
Neither team was able to tack another run on the board, as Syracuse came out on top, 9-6.
Game 2
Syracuse used a four-run second inning to claim a six-inning lead over the Bulldogs.
Dossett began the scoring action for Syracuse with an RBI homerun to get the Orange on the board, 1-0. Hansen followed up by slamming a 3 RBI double to extend the lead, 4-0.
The Bulldogs came back to score a run apiece in both the second and third innings, but the Orange defense held UGA to just two runs in six innings of play.
Hansen continued to shine for the Orange, as the sophomore registered an RBI double to bring Sammy Fernandez through home plate and increase the Orange lead, 5-2.
The Bulldogs held strong, registering four runs thanks to a bases-clearing double in the final frame of the game to come up on top, 6-5.
The Orange will face Georgia in a rematch tomorrow at 3 p.m. before finishing out day two versus Winthrop at 5:30.
