Orange split second-straight day at UGA Tournament
ATHENS, Ga. – On day two of the Red and Black Showcase, the Orange (2-2) split a pair of games with Georgia and Winthrop.
Syracuse began the day coming up short to the tournament host Bulldogs (4-0), 14-2, but then came back to shut out the Eagles (1-3), 4-0, in the final game of day two at Jack Turner Stadium.
Game 1
Syracuse got on the board first in the rematch with the Bulldogs, as junior Faith Cain doubled to right center field to bring sophomore Alicia Hansen through home plate.
The Orange let up a pair of UGA runs in the bottom of the first, but came right back to even the game, 2-2, as redshirt junior Olivia Martinez flied out to center field to bring sophomore Hannah Dossett through to score.
The Bulldogs used a seven-run third inning and a five-run fourth inning to seal the 14-2 victory and halt play at Jack Turner Stadium after the top of the fifth inning due to the run rule.
Game 2
Syracuse got on the board thanks to a wild pitch from Winthrop in the first inning, allowing Sammy Fernandez to cross home plate and give the Orange a run.
In her first-career home run for the Orange, Cain slammed a ball over the back wall to round the bases and add another run to the Orange resume.
A solid stance for the Orange from the pitcher's circle, freshman Alexa Romero struck out a pair of batters swinging in the bottom of the third before sophomore Bryce Holmgren made a play to Sydney O'Hara at first base for out three.
Dossett sealed the Orange victory with a 2 RBI double to bring O'Hara and Cain in for the score and give the Orange a 4-0 lead and victory.
The Orange return to action tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. to close out the Red and Black Showcase versus Winthrop.
