
Orange Shut Out St. John’s, Defeat Savannah State

Syracuse advances to 5-2
BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Orange increased its win streak to four games, as Syracuse (5-2) shut out fellow New York school St. John's (2-4), 3-0, and defeated Savannah State (0-9), 7-1, on Friday in the first day of competition at the Strike Out Cancer Tournament in Boca Raton.
Sophomore transfer Bryce Holmgren tallied three RBI to lead the Orange offense on the day, while junior shortstop Sammy Fernandez was 5-of-7 from home plate while adding three runs. Sophomore second baseman Alicia Hansen also added three runs in the pair of games.
Freshman Alexa Romero (3-1) led the Orange from the pitcher's circle in game one, recording zero runs, five strikeouts and two hits in 16 batters faced and 4.0 innings pitched. Senior pitcher Sydney O'Hara was awarded with her second save of the season in the first game, as she tallied four strikeouts, zero runs and a hit in 10 batters faced over 3.0 innings.
Junior AnnaMarie Gatti (1-1) owned the circle in the second game, recording eight strikeouts, three walks, six hits and one run in 31 batters faced over 7.0 innings.
Game One
With the score knotted at 0-0 through the first three innings, the Orange took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth frame. Junior infielder Faith Cain nailed an RBI single to bring Holmgren home for the first run, while Hansen grounded out to the pitcher but brought Fernandez through home plate for the second run.
The Orange maintained the 2-0 lead until the top of the sixth inning, when Hansen tallied her first run of the day off of a wild pitch from the Red Storm to seal the 3-0 victory.
Game Two
The Orange tallied runs in each of the first five innings while preventing the Tigers from crossing home plate. Holmgren starting things off with a 2 RBI double in the bottom of the first to bring in Fernandez and Hansen for a pair of runs.
In the second frame, Holmgren's hitting came into play once again as the sophomore hit a 2 RBI single to bring lead-off pair of Fernandez and Hansen once again.
Freshman Toni Martin lined out to center infield, but sophomore Hannah Dossett capitalized on the commotion at first base to sprint home for the fifth Orange run of the game.
O'Hara slammed the first triple for the Orange this season in the bottom of the fourth inning, as the senior recorded an RBI on the bomb to bring Holmgren in for the score.
Fernandez singled to center field to bring Burkhardt home for the final Syracuse run of the game, but Martin was caught out at home plate, preventing the Orange from ending the game in five innings.
Savannah State tried to stretch out the game in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Tigers tallied its only run, but the Orange defense shut it down and closed out the game on top, 7-1.
Syracuse looks to continue its winning streak with a pair of games tomorrow to close out the FAU Tournament. The Orange will take on Tulsa at 9 a.m. and Toledo at 1:30 p.m.
