Orange Claim Fifth-Straight Win
CLEMSON, S.C. – Andrew White III tallied his fifth-straight 20-point outing and Tyus Battle sank a last-second buzzer-beater from behind the arc, as Syracuse (16-9, 8-4 ACC) defeated Clemson (13-10, 3-8 ACC), 82-81, on Tuesday night at Littlejohn Coliseum.
With seven seconds on the clock and the Orange down, 81-79, John Gillon brought the ball down the court to find Tyler Lydon at the top of the arc. Lydon took one look to his right and made a swift pass to Battle, who put the 3-pointer up for the last-second buzzer-beater under pressure to secure the fifth-straight conference victory.
White III had 23 points on the night to tally his 24th double-digit performance this season. The graduate transfer also added five rebounds on the night.
Three other Orange players scored in double-digits, as Lydon added 17 points and a team-leading nine rebounds.
Freshman Taurean Thompson came in with 14 points, all of which were scored in the second half, while adding four boards and an assist.
Graduate transfer Gillon was the fourth Orange player with double-digit scoring numbers, as the guard had 13 points and a team-high eight assists.
A 22-10 Clemson lead left the Orange behind by 12 in the first half, the largest margin of the game between the two clubs.
Back-to-back dunks from Lydon and senior Tyler Roberson cut the lead and started a 9-2 run to bring the Orange within five, 24-19. Roberson had seven rebounds and six points on the night.
A trio of free throws from Gillon brought the Orange within three, 32-29, with 4:04 left in the half. A pair of 3-pointers from White III gave the Orange its first lead, 38-34, in the first half.
The Tigers returned the effort with six-straight points to close out the half on top, 40-38.
Thompson led the Orange scoring streak to begin the second half, tallying his first points of the night with seven straight to take the lead, 45-44. The freshman had 12 of the first 15 points scored out of the locker room.
Clemson drained a 3-pointer to establish a nine-point, 70-61 lead, marking the largest of the second half.
Led by a White III 3-pointer, the Orange came back with a 16-6 run to take the lead, 77-76, for the first Syracuse lead since the 12:38 mark of the second half. White III tallied five triple baskets on the game.
The Tigers would claim two more leads in the final 1:30 of the game, before the last-second 3-pointer from Battle sealed the road victory for the Orange, 82-81, and marked the fifth-straight conference victory. Battle finished tonight's matchup with six points.
The Orange look to claim its sixth-straight victory at Pittsburgh on Saturday, Feb. 11. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
