
Orange Close Out Tournament Play in Tampa

‘Cuse to play four games in two days
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange head to Tampa, Florida, this weekend to compete in its fourth and final tournament. Syracuse (9-5) will go head-to-head with Georgia State (10-6), USF (9-5), Penn (0-0) and Central Michigan (4-6) in a pair of games on Friday, March 3 and Saturday, March 4.
South Florida will host Friday's games at the USF Softball Stadium, while 'Cuse will travel to Clearwater, Florida, for Saturday's games at the Eddie C. Moore Complex. Live stats will be available for all games. Links are listed below.
The Orange and the Panthers meet for the fourth time in history, as Syracuse holds a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series. The pair first met in 2006 at the Marriott Buzz Classic where the Orange claimed a 7-5 victory. SU played the Panthers the next year at the Florida State Invitational and lost, 5-2. 'Cuse and Georgia State played for a third time at the Panthers' home tournament in 2011 where Syracuse won, 13-1.
The Panthers are 10-6 so far this season with losses to Mississippi State, Georgia Tech, North Florida, Illinois, Nebraska-Omaha and Radford. Georgia State was 33-28 last season and 13-10 in the Sun Belt Conference.
Syracuse and South Florida will play for the 16th time this weekend, as Syracuse trails the Bulls in the all-time series, 4-11. The pair first met in 2000 when USF claimed a 4-2 victory. Syracuse won its first contest over South Florida in 2006 (1-0), before USF won six-straight meetings between 2008 and 2011. The pair most recently met in 2013, when USF won 2-1 in eight innings.
The Bulls are 9-5 on the year with losses to Florida, Wisconsin, James Madison and Ole Miss. South Florida was ranked through the first three weeks of the season, with the highest standing at #20.
The Orange and the Quakers meet for the seventh time this weekend, as Syracuse holds a 4-2 advantage in the all-time series. Penn claimed its first victory over the Orange in the inaugural meeting 2003 in a 4-3 final decision in eight innings. Syracuse won four-straight contests from 2004 to 2015, before Penn won the second matchup of 2015, 10-8.
The Quakers will open up the 2017 season in Clearwater this weekend with five contests on the board. Penn was the winner in 14 games last season.
Syracuse and Central Michigan will play for just the second time in history this weekend, as the first meeting was just two years ago. The Orange own a 1-0 all-time series record, as SU defeated CMU 3-2 at the Total Sports Control Invitational in Illinois.
Central Michigan is 4-6 so far this season, with losses two Ohio State (2), Lamar (2), Texas A&M, and Quinnipiac. The Chippewas were 24-27-1 last season and 11-11-1 in MAC play. CMU lost back-to-back games in the MAC tournament to No. 1 Kent State and Western Michigan to end the 2016 season.
