COLLEGE PARK, Md. – No. 5/4 Syracuse had its seven-game winning streak to start the season come to an end in a 17-7 setback at No. 1/1 Maryland on Saturday, March 11. The Orange are now 7-1, while the Terrapins improve to 6-0.
Â
"We didn't put it all together at once at the same," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "We needed to put the ball in the back of the net and we didn't do that. We needed a few stops and we didn't do that."
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Maryland jumped out to a 2-0 lead before back-to-back goals by redshirt freshman Mary Rahal and sophomore Natalie Wallon evened the score at the 25:12 mark. Megan Whittle scored the first of her career-high seven goals on a free position with 23:36 on the clock, which sparked the Terrapins on a 7-0 scoring run.
Â
Junior Neena Merola found the back of the net to end Syracuse's scoring drought of nearly 20 minutes, but Whittle added two more goals to give the Terrapins an 11-4 halftime lead.
Â
Back-to-back goals by Merola and redshirt freshman Cara Quimby cut Maryland's lead to five, 12-7, with 15:43 on the clock, but that was close as Syracuse would get as the Terrapins scored the final five goals of the game.
Â
OF NOTE
Freshman Emily Hawryschuk scored her 14th goals of the season. She is now tied for the team lead in that category and is third on the team in points with 16. In addition, Hawryschuk picked up a career-high three ground balls in the loss.
Â
Freshman goalkeeper Asa Goldstock (Niskayuna, N.Y.) finished the day with nine saves, seven of which came in the second half.
Â
UP NEXT…
The Orange will face another highly-ranked team on Tuesday, March 14 when it faces No. 3/3 Florida in Gainesville.
