SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 21/22 Syracuse women's basketball team will take on Iowa State in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is set for 1:30 p.m. at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn.
Â
Saturday's game will be televised on ESPN2 with Eric Frede (play-by-play) and Dan Hughes (analyst) on the call. Brian Higgins '04 will be on the call on the Syracuse IMG Sports Network. As always, follow @CuseWBB on Twitter for live in-game updates.
Â
The Orange are making their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, sixth under head coach Quentin Hillsman. Syracuse is one of 15 programs nationally to have advanced to the second round in each of past three NCAA Tournaments.
Â
AMERICA'S BEST BACKCOURT
After its run to the 2016 NCAA Tournament final, Syracuse is on the national map, like never before. Now, Peterson and Sykes are looking to prove that they are America's best backcourt.
Â
It's been a long road back to the top for redshirt senior guard Brittney Sykes, following two season-ending injuries, but after a strong postseason in 2016, Sykes reestablished herself among the country's elite talents.
Â
Guard Alexis Peterson took a back seat as a freshman, averaging a mere 3.0 points and 1.0 rebound per contest. She emerged as the team's top scorer following Sykes' first season-ending injury, earning All-ACC honors as a sophomore. Peterson earned all-conference accolades last season, as well.Â
Â
UP TO THE CHALLENGE
The Syracuse women's basketball team has defeated four nationally ranked opponents during the 2016-17 regular season, eclipsing the program regular-season record set a year ago. The Orange have knocked off No. 22 Michigan State, No. 23/22 NC State, No. 14/14 Miami, and No. 19/21 Virginia Tech.
Â
With the team's win against Michigan State, Syracuse has beaten at least one nationally ranked opponent each of the last 10 years. Last season, the Orange set a program record by defeating five nationally ranked foes.
Â
For the first time in Syracuse women's basketball history, the club played three nationally ranked opponents in the month of November. The Orange dropped contests against No. 8/8 Ohio State and No. 18/17 DePaul, before rebounding with a victory against Michigan State.
