SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse softball program will add another squad member this upcoming fall, according to a Friday announcement by head coach Mike Bosch. Neli Casares-Maher, a native of Santa Ana, California, has signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) and will start with the Orange in the fall of 2017.
"We are excited to be welcoming Neli into the Syracuse softball family," Bosch said. "She is an athletic infielder who has played at the highest level of softball for her entire career and I would expect her to make an immediate impact on our program."
Casares-Maher competed at shortstop for Mater Dei High School for four years under head coach Jessica Foley within the Division I Trinity League. She boasts a career batting average of .401 with 115 hits and 33 stolen bases.
Casares-Maher was named to the first team and second team All-Trinity League in 2015 and 2016, respectively. She also earned the title of Mater Dei Player of the Year in 2015, and Defensive Player of the Year in 2016. In 2016, she led her team to victory in the California Interscholastic Federation Southern (CIF) Section Softball Championship.
The National Letter-of-Intent program was started in 1964. Administered by the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA), the program was designed with prospective student-athletes in mind. A signed letter-of-intent indicates a prospective student-athlete agrees to attend the designated college or university for one academic year. Institutions agree to provide athletics financial aid for one academic year to the student-athlete, provided the student-athlete is admitted to the institution and is eligible for financial aid under NCAA rules.
