5/25/2017 10:51:00 PM | Track and Field
Colin Bennie became the first member of the Orange to punch a ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday to highlight night one of the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Lexington, Kentucky.
Bennie took 12th in the 10,000-meters in a time of 30:05.04, to earn the automatic berth into the NCAA Championships in two weeks in Eugene, Oregon. For Bennie, it's his third-straight trip to the championship in the event.
Philo Germano just missed returning to Oregon. The ACC runner-up in the 10k, Germano finished in 30:36.31, which was good for 20th overall, but not fast enough to qualify.
In the women's race, Shannon Malone raced to a personal-best mark of 34:08.98, which was good for 14th overall. She missed out on gaining a berth into the NCAA Championship race by two places and under-10 seconds.
The other runner from Thursday who's moving on is Danielle Delgado in the 400-meter hurdles. She placed third in her heat in a time of 59.41 seconds, which was good to earn an automatic qualifying spot to Friday's final. Delgado will look to be the second member of the Orange to get to Eugene at 7 p.m. on Friday after she races in the 100-meter hurdles prelims earlier in the day.
In the 1500-meter run, Adam Palamar was slowed due to injury and will not get an opportunity to follow up on his fifth-place finish at this year's indoor NCAA championships in the mile. Palamar finished in 4:00.46, which was 45th overall.
After breaking the school record in the 400-meters earlier this season, Kadejhia Sellers also saw her season come to an end on Thursday, when she finished with a time of 54.77 seconds in the 400-meter dash, which was good for 38th.
Tia Thevenin and Delgado will open Friday's racing for the Orange at 4:30 p.m. in the 100-meter hurdles. Freddie Crittenden III will then take to the track in the 110-meter hurdles at 5 p.m. Both of those races are prelims, with the hope of advancing to Saturday's quarterfinal.
Syracuse will also have four runners racing in quarterfinal races with trips to Eugene on the line. Delgado's 400-meter hurdles race will kick off that portion at 7 p.m., followed by the men's and women's 3000-meter steeplechases at 8:20 and 9 p.m. Paige Stoner and Sydney Leiher will compete in the women's race, while Aidan Tooker will represent the men.
