Stoner breaks school record in 3000-meter steeplechase
It was a pair of women that came away with All-America honors on Saturday, highlighted by Paige Stoner's Second Team All-America honors in the 3000-meter Steeplechase, while Tia Thevenin picked up Honorable Mention All-America honors in the 100-meter hurdles.
In the Steeplechase, Stoner set a new personal-best time and school record in a time of 10:02.56, ultimately finishing sixth in her heat after working her way up the field throughout the race. The sixth-place finish ultimately led her to await the results of the second heat, needing her time to earn one of the two at large qualifying spots to Sunday.
The second heat was paced slightly faster, leading Stoner to finish 15th overall, two seconds and three places out of the final heat.
"I just tried to go out and relax and move my way up throughout the race and I did that," Stoner said. "I wish I moved with the girl from Wake Forest [fifth-place finisher Ellie Abrahamson], but you're always going to have something you wish you would have done."
Â
Hope Schmelzle from Northern Illinois posted the top-time overall in the steeplechase, finishing in 9:50.51.
"It's been a great experience and I'm happy regardless of the outcome," Thevenin said. "Being out here as one of the only sprinters, I can't wait to bring things that I've learned back to share with them in hopes that we have a huge group out here next year. I want to be back here next year and I will. I'll be back and it'll be a better outcome."
Thevenin and Stoner join Aidan Tooker (3000-meter steeplechase) and Colin Bennie (10,000-meters) in earning All-America honors this week.
The NCAA Championships will conclude for the Orange on Friday night, with 'Cuse's top-seed entering the meet hitting the track in the 5,000-meters. Justyn Knight, who comes into the event holding the nation's fastest collegiate time – which was the world's fastest time at one point this season – will race at 10:25 p.m. eastern on ESPN on Friday.
