Day Two at the World Cup Features More Wins for the Orange

GUILDFORD, Surrey – The 12 current or former Orange and two coaches remain unbeaten after the second day of pool play at the 2017 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Women's World Cup in Guildford, Surrey in England.

In Pool A play, Team Canada defeated Wales, 10-6. Wales scored the first goal of the game, but Canada responded with six unanswered tallies to close out the first half. The Canadians extended their lead to 8-2 before Wales netted back-to-back goals to cut its deficit to 8-4. That was close as Wales would get as the teams traded goals during the final 11 minutes as Team Canada improved to 2-0. Rising senior Alie Jimerson recorded four points (2g, 2a), while rising senior Taylor Gait scored her first World Cup goal. Syracuse head coach Gary Gait and assistant coach Caitlin Defliese are assistant coaches on the Team Canada staff.

Team USA also improved to 2-0 in Pool A with a 15-8 win against Australia. With the score tied at 2-2, the U.S. scored six straight goals to take an 8-2 lead. Orange All-American Kayla Treanor capped the offensive outburst with her only goal of the game. Team USA extended its lead to 12-4 before Australia attempted a comeback, using a 4-2 scoring run to get within six, 14-8, with less than eight minutes remaining. The score stayed that way until 2012 Tewaaraton Award finalist Michelle Tumolo assisted on a goal by Kelly Rabil with 52 seconds remaining for the 15-8 final. Treanor added two assists to go along with her goal, while Tumolo had two goals and an assist. IWLCA Defender of the Year Becca Block helped anchor Team USA's defense in the win.

In Pool B action, the Haudenosaunee Nationals defeated Hong Kong, 11-4. The Haudenosaunee never trailed in the game and used a 7-0 scoring run to take control of the game. Rising sophomore Wadata:wi Bomberry scored a pair of goals and had an assist, while Erin Francis had a goal and three assists. Awehiyo Thomas recorded three points (1g, 2a), and Katie Smith picked up a draw control. In addition, Amber Hill-Donhauser made five saves.

On Saturday, Canada takes on Scotland, while the Haudenosaunee will face Switzerland. Team USA takes on the host country England.
