Messner, Santora competing at the 2017 World Rowing U23 Championships
PLOVDIV, Bulgaria – Rising seniors Noah Messner and Dominic Santora of the Syracuse men's rowing team hit the water for the first time on Thursday morning at the 2017 World Rowing U23 Championships. Messner, Santora, and the United States men's coxed eight crew finished in second place in its heat.
The American boat, with Messner in the bow position and Santora serving as the crew's coxswain, finished in second place behind the 2016 World Rowing U23 champion Netherlands. The Orange duo helped the boat cover the 2,000-meter course in 5:26.980, three seconds behind the winning Dutch crew.
Competition will resume on Friday morning with the men's coxed eight repechages. The top two finishers from each repechage will advance to Sunday morning's grand final, while all remaining boats will race in the petite final.
A native of Grand Rapids, Mich., Messner has held a spot in the top Syracuse crew each of the past two years. A public health major in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, he helped Syracuse to an eighth-place showing at the 2017 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championship Regatta, its sixth top-10 finish under head coach Dave Reischman.
Santora, a product of Cleveland, Ohio, has acted as the coxswain of the Orange first varsity eight boat each of the last two seasons. A public health major in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, he guided the Orange to a victory against No. 6 Boston University for the Conlan Cup, the highest ranked boat Syracuse had defeated in the regular season in Reischman's tenure.
