Alex Lamontagne recorded the only goal for the Orange
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse women's soccer (1-0-1) forced No. 14 Connecticut (0-0-1) to a double overtime, 1-1, tie in the home opener Monday night at SU Soccer Stadium. Senior forward Alex Lamontagne scored the sole goal for the Orange in the 74th minute of the game, her first of the season.
"UConn is a very good team and they are always in the NCAA tournament," said head coach Phil Wheddon. "I thought it was a very physical contest and we had spells but they did a really good job of putting us under pressure."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The game remained scoreless through the first half and much of the second until Lamontagne put the ball on goal with a shot from square in front of the net. The Connecticut goalkeeper recorded the save but gave the ball right back to Lamontagne who drilled it past the keeper for an unassisted goal, giving 'Cuse the 1-0 lead in the 74th minute.
Shortly after, the Huskies made it a tie game when Zoe Steck took a thru pass from Tanya Altrui to notch her first goal of the season from the left side of the box. It was all goalkeepers for the rest of the match as the two net minders combined for 16 saves in the game.
OF NOTE
The Orange have gone undefeated in home openers in 10 of their last 11 seasons, posting a record of 6-1-4. Under the direction of Coach Wheddon, Syracuse has not recorded a loss in nine of the 10 home openers played during his tenure.
With nine saves on the night, senior goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan has recorded 255 career saves, moving her into third place in program history for career saves. She trails only Eliza Bennett-Hattan (331) and Brittany Anghel (303).
COACH'S THOUGHTS
"I think when we get the ball on the ground and we move it quickly we are phenomenal," said Wheddon. "We have some dangerous players up front and the system that we are playing allows us to really show some of the talent that we have."
UP NEXT…
The Orange hit the road for their next contest at Army West Point on Thursday, August 24 in West Point, N.Y. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
