SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's soccer team (2-1-1) kicks off a seven-game home stand with a matchup against the Cornell Big Red (0-0-0) Thursday night at 7 p.m. at SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange faced off with the Big Red in 2016, taking a 2-1 overtime victory thanks to a pair of goals from Stephanie Skilton ('17).
Â
Last Time Out
Syracuse squared off with No. 8 Florida on Sunday night, ultimately coming up short, 2-1, on the road. Sophomore Sydney Brackett notched her third goal of the season off a cross pass from Alana O'Neill. Senior Courtney Brosnan made three saves for the Orange on 17 shots faced by the Gators.
Â
Chasing Records
Brackett paces the Orange in goals with three through four games this season. She is chasing a couple program records, as two more goals would put her tied for sixth in program history for goals by a sophomore. Erin O'Grady holds the current record for goals by a sophomore with 15 goals during the 1998 season. Brackett also has the chance to move into the top five in school history for points (17), as she sits at six points so far this season.
Â
Tough Road Ahead
The Orange have now faced two ranked opponents this season, holding a 0-1-1 record in those games. Playing in one of the toughest women's soccer conferences in the nation, 'Cuse faces six more ranked foes in conference play this season. The next battle is on September 21 against No. 18 Wake Forest.
Â
Scouting the Big Red
Cornell opens its season at Syracuse after finishing the 2016 campaign 5-9-2 with a 3-5-1 nonconference record. Senior Paige DeLoach leads the returners in points (nine) and goals (four). Junior Meghan Kennedy returns in goal for the Big Red after earning All-Ivy League honorable mention with a 1.01 goals against average and three shutouts in 2016.
Â
Up Next…
The Orange continue their home stand against Fairfield on Sunday with kickoff set for 1 p.m. Admission to all home games is free.
