Freshman Kate Donovan scores twice in 3-0 win over Cornell
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse women's soccer (3-1-1) kicked off a seven-game home stand with a decisive 3-0 victory over Cornell (0-1-0) Thursday night at SU Soccer Stadium. Freshman Kate Donovan recorded her first and second collegiate goals in the win for the Orange.
"It's always great to go out and get a win. We respect Cornell and know that they had a couple of very dangerous corner kicks," said head coach Phil Wheddon. "I'm really proud of the fact that everyone got into the game and that everyone made an impact. Everyone stepped up and they didn't let down."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
'Cuse struck early after Cornell took a foul in the box, setting up Taylor Bennett for a penalty kick goal. The score was Bennett's first goal of the season and the first penalty kick goal for Syracuse in 2017.
Donovan added to the Syracuse lead in the 43rd minute, taking a pass from Opal Curless through a pair of defenders and burying the ball in the back of the net to give the Orange a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
The momentum continued to roll for 'Cuse as Jessica Vigna booted a corner kick towards the far post in the 53rd minute, allowing Carolin Bader to pass the ball back to Donovan who headed it past the keeper for her second goal of the night.
OF NOTE
Donovan is the second freshman this season to record a goal with the other score coming from Kate Hostage against Army West Point. She is also the second Orange player to tally two goals in a game this season after Sydney Brackett tabbed two in the season opener at Bucknell.
A TEAM EFFORT
Thursday night's victory was truly a team effort as 21 of the 23 players on Syracuse's roster saw action on the pitch. Nine different Orange players recorded a shot in the game, led by senior Alana O'Neill who finished the night with four. Syracuse ended the night with 16 shots, the second most the team has recorded this season, following only the game at Bucknell when the Orange tabbed 22 shots.
UP NEXT…
The Orange continue their home stand against Fairfield on Sunday at SU Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and admission to all home games is free.
