'Cuse Outlasts Harvard in Shutout Fashion

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's soccer team (5-2-1) outlasted the Harvard Crimson (4-2-0) in a tight 1-0 game Sunday afternoon at SU Soccer Stadium. The sole goal of the match came on an own goal by the Crimson in the 49th minute.
"It doesn't matter how the ball goes into the goal," said head coach Phil Wheddon. "It could be a screamer from 30 yards out that goes into the top corner or a sloppy goal that bounces around, they all count the same at the end of the day. We are very happy to come away with another win and a shutout."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The lone goal of the game came in the 49th minute as freshman Kate Hostage battled it out with a pair of Crimson defenders in front of the Harvard net. The ball was pushed back to the Crimson keeper who missed on the clearing attempt, resulting in a goal for Syracuse, thanks in part to the pressure applied by Hostage.
OF NOTE
Keeper Courtney Brosnan tied former Orange Brittany Anghel ('13) for career wins at 29. The senior is also one shutout closer to moving into second place in program history for career shutouts. With the win over Harvard, the senior now has 18 career shutouts under her belt, just two shy of second place. Anghel and Eliza Bennett-Hattan are the only two goalkeepers ahead of Brosnan with 22 and 20 career shutouts, respectively.
The Orange pinned 13 shots on the Crimson in the match, marking the sixth time this season that Syracuse has posted 10 or more shots in a game. 'Cuse is undefeated when recording 10 or more shots, moving to 5-0-1 on the year when shooting in double digits.
COACH'S THOUGHTS
"I wish Courtney wouldn't tip the ball over the bar and give up corner kicks because that makes me feel a little older," said Wheddon. "I've said many times that Courtney is one of the best goalkeepers in the country and I firmly believe that. She will go on from here and play at a very high level because she is a complete goalkeeper."
UP NEXT…
The Orange kickoff ACC play at home against Miami in a Friday afternoon contest. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. and admission to all home games is free.
