SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore John-Austin Ricks scored in the 87th minute to give the No. 7/13 Syracuse men's soccer team a 3-2 come-from-behind victory against Oregon State on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange remain unbeaten, improving their record to 4-0-2 this season.
Â
"We've done that a lot this year," Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said about his team's ability to come from behind. "We changed a couple of things formation-wise after they scored, we got back in (the game) by playing some good soccer, and then, at the end of the first half, I thought they got back on top of the game. Full credit to their players and coaches. We had our hands full tonight."
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The game-winning goal came on a set piece. Junior Hugo Delhommelle served the ball into the box to the near post on a corner kick. Ricks headed the ball toward the far post where it deflected off an Oregon State defender into the back of the net.
Â
The Beavers (2-4) took an early lead, but the Orange evened things up when junior Jonathan Hagman scored on an assist from junior Adnan Bakalovic in the 16th minute. Syracuse took its first lead of the night in the 54th minute when junior Kamal Miller converted a penalty kick for his first goal of the season.
Â
Oregon State responded in the 66th minute when Matthias Binder placed his free kick from 25 yards out just inside the left post. The Orange had several scoring chances and finally broke through with the go-ahead goal with just 3:59 remaining in regulation.
Â
OF NOTE
The win marked the 58th consecutive victory for Syracuse when it scores three or more goals in a game. It also improved the Orange's non-conference, regular-season record to 38-4-2 since 2013.
Â
Junior goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert made two saves and recorded his 26th career victory, which put him in a tie for fifth place on Syracuse's all-time wins list.
Â
UP NEXT…
The Orange return to ACC play on Friday when they host No. 17/12 Louisville at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission and parking are free.
