Orange Blanked by No. 5 North Carolina

CARY, N.C. – Syracuse could not find the back of the net as No. 5 North Carolina blanked the Orange, 7-0 on Saturday at Koka Booth Stadium. Amidst the loss, senior keeper Courtney Brosnan notched a season-high 11 saves, the most saves she has posted since Oct. 27, 2016 when she made 11 stops in the season finale against Boston College.
"You prepare to play against every opposition and in the ACC you are playing against some of the best teams in the country on a weekly basis," said head coach Phil Wheddon. "UNC was dominant in every facet of the game and I give tremendous credit to their coaching staff and their players. They were relentless with and without the ball."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Twenty-six total shots and four first-half goals fueled the Tar Heels offense throughout the game. Redshirt senior Joanna Boyles led the offensive effort for North Carolina, tallying her first career hat trick with three goals on six shots. Two of North Carolina's goals were headers and one of Boyles' scores came on a penalty kick.
The Orange showed some life in the second half with five shots and a pair of corners but could not convert on their scoring opportunities. Senior Alex Lamontagne and freshman Kate Hostage both recorded two shots for Syracuse.
COACH'S THOUGHTS
"This is a level that we need to get to as a program," said Wheddon. "I'm proud of the way that our team continued to fight and create chances, especially in the second half. We have to put this behind us and move forward to prepare for our two games next week."
UP NEXT
Syracuse is back in action on Thursday, Oct. 5 when the Orange hit the road to take on ACC foe Pittsburgh. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
