Orange In NBA Camps
9/25/2017 1:10:00 PM | Men's Basketball
There are 13 former Syracuse players, including 2017 first-round draft choice Tyler Lydon, who are participating in NBA training camps that open this week.
The Syracuse program has had players selected in the NBA Draft's first round in six consecutive years, a total surpassed by only Kentucky (eight straight years) and Duke (seven years).
Headlining the list of former Orange performers in training camp is Carmelo Anthony, who was just traded from the New York Knicks to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Anthony joins former 'Cuse standout Jerami Grant with the Thunder, as well as NBA stars Paul George and Russell Westbrook. The other Syracuse product in the NBA's Northwest Division is Lydon, who is with the Denver Nuggets.
Dion Waiters, who is coming off one of his better professional seasons, returns to the Miami Heat. Another guard, Tyler Ennis, re-signed with the Los Angeles Lakers after finishing the last season there. Chris McCullough was traded from Brooklyn to Washington during the 2016-17 campaign and now enters his first training camp with the Wizards.
After a few years honing his skills overseas, guard Andy Rautins earned a training camp invitation from the Toronto Raptors. He had a previous stint in the league with the Knicks. Andrew White was Syracuse's top scorer a year ago and his offseason performance in the NBA Summer League earned him a spot in the Boston Celtics' camp.
Other Syracuse players who are with new NBA clubs include Michael Carter-Williams (Charlotte Hornets), Michael Gbinije (Golden State Warriors) and James Southerland (Golden State Warriors). In addition to having Gbinije and Southerland, the NBA's Pacific Division also includes Wesley Johnson (Los Angeles Clippers) and Malachi Richardson (Sacramento Kings).
The NBA regular season begins October 17.
