Orange Topped by Fighting Irish in Final Seconds

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Notre Dame (13-3, 3-0 ACC) made a put-back shot with two seconds left to defeat Syracuse (12-4, 1-2 ACC), 51-49, Saturday afternoon in the Carrier Dome. Sophomore Tyus Battle led Syracuse with 21 points in the setback.
Freshman Oshae Brissett recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds and junior Frank Howard added 10 points for the Orange.
TJ Gibbs led the Fighting Irish with 18 points and Rex Pflueger finished with 12 points and seven boards.
How it was Decided
A Notre Dame steal with five seconds left set up a Gibbs layup. Gibbs missed a contested shot but Pflueger followed and tipped it in. Syracuse missed a last second heave from half court.
Game Summary
A 9-0 run gave Syracuse an early 9-1 lead. Battle scored six points and Brissett added a 3-pointer. Notre Dame trimmed the gap to two with 9:18 to play in the first half but Battle answered with a 3-pointer and Howard made a layup in transition to give the Orange a 15-8 advantage and force a Fighting Irish timeout.
Two Marek Dolezaj free throws and 3-point field goals from Howard and Brissett powered an 8-2 Syracuse run to take a 10-point lead. Syracuse shot 10-of-20 (50.0 percent) from the floor and 5-of-8 (62.5 percent) from beyond the arc, while holding Notre Dame to 6-of-29 (20.7 percent) shooting in the first half. The Orange led 28-19 at the break.
The Fighting Irish opened up the second half with an 8-0 run to trim the deficit to one. Battle hit a jumper and Brissett knocked down a trey to put the Orange up 33-27 with 15:28 remaining. A Notre Dame 3-pointer left the Fighting Irish trailing by 1. The teams traded baskets on three-straight possessions and Syracuse led 44-43 with 4:00 to play.
Four-straight points gave Notre Dame a 47-44 lead and Battle answered with a layup for the Orange. Two free throws on the next possession extended the Fighting Irish lead back to three with 58 seconds to play. Battle answered with a trey from the top of the key to tie the game with 49 seconds to go.
Numbers of Note
Syracuse shot 39.1 percent (18-of-46) from the field and Notre Dame finished the game shooting 30.4 percent (17-of-56). The Fighting Irish out-rebounded the Orange 42-27 and held a 21-8 edge on the offensive glass.
Battle, Brissett and Howard combined for 41-of-49 (83.7 percent) Syracuse points. Bourama Sidibe added four paints and Paschal Chukwu and Dolezaj finished with two points each.
24,304 basketball fans filled the Carrier Dome this afternoon. That total is the highest on-campus crowd in the nation this season. Syracuse now has five of the top ten on-campus attendance totals nationally.
