Syracuse track and field coach Dave Hegland has been promoted to Associate Head Coach after more than a decade of overseeing the Orange's sprints, jumps and hurdles programs.
Hegland, the USTFCCCA Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year in the last-three indoor seasons, has mentored athletes to 27 NCAA Championship appearances. Headlined by Jarret Eaton's 2012 NCAA Championship in the 60-meter hurdles, Hegland's athletes have earned seven USTFCCCA First Team All-America honors in his tenure.
"I'm very grateful to Coach Bell and our administration for this opportunity," Hegland said. "I consider myself tremendously fortunate to have represented Syracuse for a long time and am excited to continue working with Coach Bell as we build upon our program's past success. This university has been a wonderful place for me, and I look forward to helping the next generation of Syracuse athletes compete successfully at the highest level."
Hegland, who helped coach the Orange men to the 2016 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championship and a runner-up performance at the 2018 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championship, has coached 15 athletes to earn 25 conference championships (seven ACC, 18 BIG EAST).Â
"I am excited that Dave has been named Associate Head Coach. It is a designation he has earned and deserves," said head coach Brien Bell. "Dave and I have worked side by side together for 13 years and I am honored to continue our relationship. We couldn't have a better, smarter coach be our program's co-pilot."
Hegland arrived at Syracuse in 2004 as a graduate assistant, before taking over the sprints and hurdles programs in the 2005-06 season and jumps in the 2010-11 season. Consistency has been key in that time for Hegland, who has coached at least one individual national qualifier every year since 2007 and a conference champion every year since 2006.
In his time on the hill, 'Cuse has been especially successful in the men's high hurdles. The Syracuse men have seen 18 NCAA Championship appearances in that event area, and finished the 2018 indoor season ranked first nationally in the USTFCCCA event squad rankings.
Hegland's athletes have gone on to successful professional careers as well. Jarret Eaton is a two-time U.S. Champion in the 60 meter hurdles and was the 2018 World Silver Medalist in that event. Flings Owusu-Agyapong was Ghana's flag bearer at the 2016 Olympic Games, and Freddie Crittenden III is coming off a successful first pro season in which he ranked third among US hurdlers and qualified for the Diamond League final.   Â
