Orange Host Media Day At Melo

The men's basketball program had its first official interactions with members of the media in advance of the 2018-19 season at the annual media day in the Carmelo Anthony Basketball Center on Friday.Â
Hall of Fame Coach Jim Boeheim took questions about the 43rd Syracuse team he will head up. Boeheim, who ranks second on the all-time win list for Division I Coaches, owns the longest active streak of head coaches at one school.Â
The Orange are one of four teams that welcome back all five starters who also are the top five scorers from the previous season. Senior center Paschal Chukwu, senior guard Frank Howard, junior guard Tyus Battle and sophomore forwards Oshae Brissett and Marek Dolezaj combine to represent that distinction. Brown, Harvard and Iowa are the only other programs who fit the criteria this year.
Boeheim noted the experienced veterans he has to work with while talking to the media.
""Whenever you have veterans, they just have to go out and do what they are capable of doing and play the way they are capable of playing," Boeheim said. "They have set a very good example in practice. Practices have been very good. Everybody has really worked hard and at a high level. That tone is set by Tyus (Battle) and the guys that were very important last year."
The Syracuse roster features two other returning letter winners among its scholarship players -- sophomore guard Howard Washington and sophomore center Bourama Sidibe.Â
Four newcomers are expected to bolster the Orange attack. Headlining the list is forward Elijah Hughes, who played one season at East Carolina before transferring to Syracuse. He is eligible this year after sitting out last season as a transfer student.Â
Three freshmen -- guards Jalen Carey and Buddy Boeheim and forward Robert Braswell -- are the other first-year performers.
Syracuse has two exhibition games on its schedule. The Orange will host the College of St. Rose on Thursday, Oct. 25, and Le Moyne on Wednesday, Oct. 31, in the Dome. The regular-season opener is Tuesday, Nov. 6, versus Eastern Washington.Â
