SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's soccer team caps off its three-match homestand with an Atlantic Coast Conference showdown against Notre Dame Saturday night inside SU Soccer Stadium. As part of the Senior Day festivities, the Orange will celebrate the careers of senior forward Drina Domic and redshirt senior goalkeeper Jordan Harris during the match, which is scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m.
The match will be televised on ACCN Extra via WatchESPN.
LAST TIME OUT
Freshman forward Meghan Root scored her second goal in as many games, but the Orange could not slow No. 3 North Carolina's attack despite Harris' career-high 11 saves, suffering a 7-1 setback Sunday afternoon.
North Carolina took the lead in the fifth minute and tacked on another goal in the 25th minute to go up 2-0. Syracuse responded to the adversity just three minutes later, but the nationally-ranked Tar Heels scored again in the 35th minute to enter the half up 3-1. North Carolina would score four more times in the second half before winning 7-1.
A LOOK AROUND THE CONFERENCE
The ACC has five women's soccer teams among the United Soccer Coaches Top 25, including three teams ranked among the top 10 – No. 3 North Carolina, No. 6 Virginia, No. 8 Boston College, No. 11 Duke and No. 13 Florida State. Clemson is No. 24 in the Soccer America poll giving the ACC a total of six ranked teams this week.
SCOUTING THE FIGHTING IRISH
Notre Dame enters Saturday night's match with a 6-8 overall record. The Fighting Irish are 2-4 in conference play, coming off a 3-0 loss to Virginia last Sunday, which was their second in a row.
Junior forward Jennifer Westendorf leads the team with three goals and 10 points.
The Orange are 0-13-1 all-time against the Fighting Irish, losing last year's meeting in South Bend, Ind., by the score of 2-0.
HEAR FROM COACH WHEDDON
"We've been able to rest players. They'll come into tomorrow's game a little bit refreshed. We haven't had to travel, and it's a must-win game for Notre Dame. The competition element will be there."
"They'll be quite midfield dominant. They'll press us when we have the ball at the back or when's there's a turnover in our defensive third. They'll look to win the ball and get shots off as quickly as possible, so we expect to be under tremendous pressure at the back."
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange start a two-game road trip, heading to Charlottesville to face Virginia on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. and Winston-Salem to play Wake Forest on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m.
