SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Redshirt freshman placekicker Andre Szmyt, redshirt junior punter Sterling Hofrichter and true freshman safety Andre Cisco were recognized by multiple media outlets this week for their performances during the first half of the 2018 college football season.
Â
Szmyt was named a midseason All-American by ESPN, Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, the Associated Press, USA Today (second team), The Athletic (second team) and Athlon (second team). Hofrichter earned USA Today Midseason All-America Second Team honors, while Cisco was voted to the ESPN Midseason Freshman All-America Team.
Â
The national leader with 78 kicking points, Szmyt has made 16-of-17 (.941) field goals and all 30 of his extra-point tries this season. He leads the FBS in field goals per game (2.67) and ranks second to LSU's Cole Tracy (17) with 16 made field goals. In addition, Szmyt is the first Syracuse kicker to hit three field goals of at least 50 yards in the same season, connecting from 50, 51, and 54 yards out. His 54-yarder at Pittsburgh is the fourth-longest field goal in program history.
Â
Szmyt has been voted the ACC Specialist of the Week twice season, and was named one of three Groza Award "Stars of the Week" following the Clemson game.
Â
A three-year starter, Hofrichter leads the ACC in punting average (45.2) and most punts downed inside the 20-yard line (13). He's tied with Duke's Austin Parker for second in the league with nine punts of at least 50 yards. Hofrichter leads a Syracuse punt team that ranks seventh nationally in net average (43.3) and second in punt return defense (-1.75 ypr). Opponents have been statistically credited with four returns on 28 Syracuse punts and two of those were muffs.
Â
Cisco has started five of Syracuse's first six games at free safety. He is tied for the national lead with four interceptions, including two in the home opener against Wagner on Sept. 8. Cisco leads the team and ranks second among FBS freshmen with seven passes defended. He has 19 total tackles.
Â
Szmyt, Hofrichter and Cisco return to action this weekend when Syracuse (4-2, 1-2 ACC) hosts North Carolina (1-4, 1-2 ACC) Saturday during Homecoming/Orange Central Weekend. Kickoff is set for 12:20 p.m. on Raycom Sports.
Â
Tickets to watch the Orange and Tar Heels start at $35. They are available online (Cuse.com/tickets), by phone (888-DOME-TIX) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B).
